Not with any foreseeable Supreme Court. Nearly all meaningful campaign finance legislation has been overturned by the current Court, which has created new precedents in the process. Beyond this, the system was broken even before the Court went radical on the issue, and well before the 2010 Citizens United decision giving corporations and billionaires unlimited and mostly untraceable election spending power. In every election cycle, the system has become more undemocratic and corrupt with the greater reliance on radio and TV advertising, the rising role of campaign consultants, and the staggering and ever-mounting overall costs of election campaigns.
The only viable solution is not to play around the edges any longer. We need a fundamental change that will liberate lawmakers to work for the public good. And that baseline reform demands a Constitutional Amendment leading to public financing of campaigns and lots of free air time for election debates on the public airwaves.
People will always seek influence and be susceptible to it...obviously we’re not going to remake the entire system. But we believe that only through a Constitutional Amendment will it be possible to drag our democracy and politics back from the current precarious situation: the overwhelming, absolute, total and dangerous domination by money. And we know that with a cooperative efffort, we can do it.
