Because no single proposed Amendment introduced into Congress at this point covers all the territory we’d like to see. After considerable research and conversation with Constitutional scholars and politically savvy individuals, we chose to take the role of illuminating the issue for the public in such a manner that there will ultimately be pressure for a system that provides no private money for campaigns except very small contributions in the candidate petition and qualification stage and public financing after that. (We’d also like to see full weekend elections rather than first Tuesday elections).
At some point we expect many of the organizations seeking election reform will coalesce around specific Amendment language. In the meantime we believe that any progress on any of the proposed Amendments is good progress so long as it doesn’t preclude further movement toward liberating elected officials from fund raising.
